We haven’t done an Artist Insight for a minute, but it’s back and this is a good one. Our latest upcoming R&B maestro to be featured is Gallant, the 21 year-old crooner who is starting to gain considerable, deserved attention for a slew of tracks he’s released over the last year or so and his upcoming Zebra EP. Read on!
There isn’t a great deal to be known about Gallant at the moment, apart from the fact that he makes some extremely good records. Originally from Maryland, he moved to New York and now is based in LA. If you’re into The Weeknd, How To Dress Well and Johnny Rain, this guy fits right in with his ethereal sound but with an R&B voice more reminiscent of Usher and a falsetto almost as righteous as Maxwell’s.
The beginnings of Gallant’s rise to prominence started with his unique cover of Ke$ha’s Die Young in October 2012. It sounds like an unusual song to take on, but the stripped down edition is what started to get Gallant noticed and it marked the first of many great collaborations with producer Felix Snow (responsible for production on TDE songstress SZA’s project S and more). Check it out below, with accompanied visuals:
Gallant then followed up his Die Young cover with a number of quality tracks, building anticipation for his first project. He got the ball rolling by dropping the mellow Please? (Vignette) which incorporates elements of 90s pop/R&B with a more modern sound. See if you feel the nostalgia by streaming the song below:
Next up came airy, guitar-driven joint If It Hurts, another Felix Snow production and slightly more rock & roll than most songs in the genre but with the most plays so far:
Sirens has a heavy trap-tinged soundbed with Gallant’s falsettos laced all over it while his most recent track Manhattan is an emotion-filled number which was featured as Radio 1’s Record of the Week last month. Stream both of them below.
Now we await the release of his Zebra EP, which is apparently finished so here’s to hoping it is released sooner rather than later.
If you like what you’ve read and heard, follow Gallant’s Soundcloud and get the tracks there which are available for FREE download. You can follow him on Twitter, @SoGallant and like his Facebook page here. You can even add him on Snapchat (yes, Snapchat) at ‘sogallant’.
Stay tuned for any new releases from Gallant and look out the next Artist Insight feature!
