RIP MJ: Michael Jackson Samples In Hip-Hop

Yesterday the late, great King of Pop Michael Jackson would have turned 55. His legacy and influence on the music industry is undeniable and Jackson is one of the most sampled artists in hip-hop. Here’s a look at just a few tracks that have sampled the music of Michael and The Jackson 5.

Kanye West – Good Life

Quite a well known example, this track from Kanye’s Graduation won the Grammy for Best Rap Song back in 2008. It samples the outro to the upbeat P.Y.T from Michael Jackson’s Thriller and featured T-Pain before he became a ghost in the music industry.

MUSIC VIDEO: Jay-Z – Holy Grail (ft. Justin Timberlake)

Out of nowhere, Jay-Z has released the music video for Holy Grail from his current album Magna Carta.. Holy Grail. The visuals are dark but epic, although the track has been unnecessarily chopped and screwed, featuring a slightly different arrangement to the original which continues to dominate the charts. The album, Sunset Blvd, is due to be released later this year and it couldn’t come sooner.

Jay-Z’s Life + Times crew brings us Made In America: TDE, a short documentary following Black Hippy on their North American tour. Following Top Dawg heavyweights Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock, the film features a mixture of concert footage and interviews which give proper insights into the backgrounds of one of Hip-Hop’s hottest current collectives.

VIDEO: The Astronomical Kid Freestyles At ShowOff

Young Brooklyn MC The Astronomical Kid, otherwise known simply as Astro, stopped by Statik Selektah’s ShowOff Radio show to kick a freestyle for the folks in the studio. Fresh off of the back of his Kendrick Lamar reply track KONY, the 16-year old prodigy proves his worth with a dope, live freestyle. Video below:
